What is WCPM?
WCPM, or Words Correct Per Minute, is a standard measure of oral reading fluency. A student reads a passage aloud for a set amount of time — usually one minute — while an examiner marks any errors. The result tells you not just how fast a student reads, but how accurately, which is why it's one of the most widely used reading fluency checks in classrooms and reading intervention programs.

For example, if a student reads 130 words in one minute and makes 5 errors, their WCPM score is (130 − 5) ÷ 1 = 125 WCPM.
How to run a reading fluency check
STEP 1
Pick an unpracticed passage
Use grade-level text the student hasn't seen before, so the score reflects real fluency rather than memorization.
STEP 2
Time one minute of reading
Have the student read aloud while you follow along on a copy, marking any word that's misread, skipped, or reordered.
STEP 3

What counts as an error
- — A word read incorrectly or mispronounced
- — A word skipped entirely
- — Words read out of order
- — A word the examiner had to supply after a pause of a few seconds
Self-corrections within a few seconds are usually not counted as errors — most rubrics count the word as correct if the student catches and fixes it themselves.
How to read the score
A WCPM number only means something next to a benchmark for the student's grade and time of year. The most widely used reference is the Hasbrouck-Tindal oral reading fluency norms, compiled from large-scale classroom data across grades 1–8. As a general reference point, a first-grade student reading roughly 40 WCPM or more is typically considered at low risk for reading difficulty, while a score under 20 WCPM is usually a signal to look closer. For other grades, scores are compared against students at the same grade and time of year — a student scoring noticeably below their grade's typical range (commonly used as roughly 10 or more words under the 50th percentile) is often flagged for extra fluency support.
